City or Country?

After a few conversations with various family members and then a brisk afternoon walk in the country, something profound occurred to me.  Are you ready for this?  It probably will seem way out there to you citified folk, but might ring a true bell for you country cuties.

LIVING IN THE COUNTRY MAKES IT EASIER TO KNOW GOD.

Why?  Well, in the city, everything is man made.  Even the sky is dimmed from pollution.  Everything is within 10 minutes or less. You are quickly awed by the magnificence of man in the city.   In the country, you get to see God’s creation absolutely everywhere.  Man-made stuff is wimpy compared with God-made stuff.  We live in a little yellow trailer on 20 acres.  TWENTY ACRES OF GOD’S MAKING.    It is outstanding.  The bright green grass, the seasonal creek, the breeze through the trees,  the night sky with millions upon millions of stars,  the coyote chasing the rabbit,  the dog chasing the chickens and then getting sent to the pound.  The domesticated rabbit scritch scratching in her cage next to  my window.  Our trailer, my mother-in-law’s modular home, all the cars, the play set, the pop up pool, it all pales in comparison to the dirt, the sky and everything in between.

I am not as fast paced out here in the country.  I can take a day and read an entire book in a hammock, or our school day can consist of hiking through the mountains and writing in our science journals, have a lesson in home economics by packing a healthy lunch from our home grown garden, or having just made homemade bread, by milling our own grain into our own flour.  Everyone can bring their favorite reader or I can spread a blanket and read aloud one of my favorites.

We get more oxygen out here in the country.  We smile more because we are not rushed or feeling beat up by all the traffic.

I stick with my profound statement and I thank God I have the privilege of raising my kids out here in redneck country:

LIVING IN THE COUNTRY MAKES IT EASIER TO KNOW GOD.

If you are completely citified and start to panic when you have to drive over 10 minutes to pick up your favorite pizza, I recommend a long drive to the country where you stay for at least 3 hours.  Do this once a month, and I have a feeling you will complain less, tolerate more, be vitamin D restored, and possibly know God better.

It’s great to be back blogging.  I was on my way  home from visiting with a friend.  Keeghan was sleeping in her car seat, covered in dirt with her hair tie all askew.  The other kids were planning their fort to build outside and then take their portable DVD player out there to watch “Garfield”, and I was driving a long stretch thinking about my blog for tonight.

This is what the LORD gave me.  Hope you enjoyed it!  Be blessed and be a blessing,

Kendra Johnson,

Total country girl and never goin’ back.  Go tractors and horse turds and trailers!

  1. Glad you are blogging again!

  2. oops! Forgot to mention that God is present in the city too, as I’m sure you already know!

  3. Loved your blog. Just wish they weren’t so long. When you’re praising something you should not downgrade something else. City living is the thing for me. Reminds me of that “Green Acres” program years ago. Everything really is 5 minutes from me and I really like that especially now that Dad and I are older. Love, Love, Love, Mom

  4. I love it! I totally agree with you my dear kindren spirit! God’s design and handiwork are the truest masterpieces and you can truly see them and feel them and know them when you aren’t cluttered with the worlds ideals and items.

Love you so much, I’m glad you’re blogging again too! Love to read it!

Now, back to the garage with my kids while we listen to Jonathan Park while painting trim for their bedroom. So they can cozy in and look out their windows later to see the beautful starry skies God so blessed us with!
